How do we handle dealing with the narcissists in our lives?  With grace, compassion, and distance.  After all, there is nothing we can do to change their views, ways, or attitudes.  Only the external force of God can do that.  While it is important to seek out knowledge as to how these people got this way, to this extreme, this is their lifestyle.  Narcissists use those around them--their children, spouse, co-workers, or even church-goers--to secure their place on high.


Often, narcissists use psychological manipulation and control through a technique called Gaslighting.  While this term has gained momentum in the last 5-years, this form of manipulation and control has been around well before the movie Gaslighting from 1962.

We can have compassion for their misguided adaption to the world around them, but we have to not take on the often-damaging goal of trying to change them.

God’s job is to work strongly on our behalf, and in this way bring glory to Himself by demonstrating to the world just a little more who He is.

• 2 Chronicles 16:99 For the eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His.

When those with insolent pride see our vindication through God’s blessing, they may respond in jealousy, but they will have to answer to God for that.

In the process, we need to maintain the same attitude as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abnego in their response to Nebuchadnezzar – even though they had complete faith that God was able to deliver them, they ultimately left it to God to handle it as He saw fit.

• Daniel 3:17-1817 If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the furnace of blazing fire; and He will deliver us out of your hand, O king.18 But even if He does not, let it be known to you, O king, that we are not going to serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”

Do you have a narcissist in your life who emotionally manipulates and controls you?  Are the steps you are taking to live with him/her causing you damage?  I pray that you will put this soul in God's hands, protect yourself, and love him/her from a distance.
